Thames RC Winning the Women Eights Head 2001 watrbird · March 14, 2012 In 2001 Thames Rowing Club won the Eight's Head of the River Race London. Starting from 8th place they so nearly overlook all the boats in front. Queens's Tower who had started 20 seconds ahead gave Thames an epic race down the boats, with both crews at 40 strokes per minute. A very early high tide and race start time of 9am, the Thames crew managed a pre race outing at 4:45am. At stroke was Olympic silver medallist from Sydney 2000 Guin Batten, with Alison Mowbray who would go onto win an Olympic Silver three years later in Athens 2004 and Elise Laverick who won two Bronzes one in Athens and the other in Beijing 2008. Also in the crew at 7 was Kate Mac who is one of the all time greats with 7 Head Pennants to her name. It was the 16th time Thames had won the race in a non-composite crew since 1930.
